Vintage 1920-1957 Larger Ceramic Copeland Spode Open Sugar Bowl – Gainsborough Pattern

The collectable “Gainsborough” pattern designed by Copeland Spode is sometimes also referred to as the Marlborough pattern and it displays an almost Asian style of floral patterning together with a scalloped rim. This interesting pattern has often been compared to the Ming rose as well as Indian Tree in its general appearance.

Josiah Spode established a pottery at Stoke-on-Trent, England in 1770. In 1883 the firm was purchased by William Copeland and Thomas Garrett and the original Spode mark was changed to Copeland Spode. In 1847 Copeland became the sole owner and the mark changed again. W.T. Copeland & Sons continued until 1976 when a merger changed the title to Royal Worcester Spode. In 2009 the company was bought by Portmeirion.

The item is stamped underneath Copeland Spode Great Britain, Gainsborough.

The sugar bowl has some age related crazing aside from which the item is in very good condition with no other damages noted.
