Retro & Vintage 1970’s Wood & Sons Alpine Ironstone Milk Jug / Creamer – Sherwood Pattern

The firm was established in 1865 by Absalom Wood and his son Thomas Francis Wood. In 1921 Harry F Wood took over from his father Thomas and the firm became successful. In 1954 the firm became an Ltd. under the name Wood & Sons. During the 1970’s the firm fought two unsuccessful takeover bids, one by Barrets in 1975 and the other by Staffordshire Pottery in 1979. The takeover bids weakened the firm financially and in 1981 the bank took control of the business placing it under receivership in 1982.

The item is a milk jug / creamer manufactured by Wood & Sons during the 1970’s and decorated in their Sherwood pattern, which displays a series of dark green leaves with foliage together with dark green puff balls. Although the Sherwood pattern was only discontinued in the 1980’s, the stamp used on this jug was used during the 1970’s

The milk jug is stamped underneath Alpine White Ironstone Wood & Sons England.

The milk jug has age related crazing, aside from which it is in good condition with no other damages noted.

Height: 11.8 cm, Diameter of base: 6.8 cm, Diameter of rim: 5.8 cm, Spout to handle: 11.8cm
