1940’s Pair of Porcelain Burleigh Ware (Burgess & Leigh) Bowls

In 1851 Hulme and Booth began the pottery business in Burslem, Stoke-On-Trent. In 1862 William Leigh and Frederick Rathbone Burgess in partnership took over the firm and moved it to Middelport Pottery at the Trent and Mercy Canal where it is located to this day. After the sons Edmund Leigh and Richard Burgess continued the firm, in 1912 the Leigh family took sole control and at the start of the 20th century the firm became known as Burleigh. In the 1990’s the firm was purchased by the Dorling family and in 2010 Burleigh was acquired by Denby Holdings Ltd. (Denby Pottery).

This item consists of two porcelain bowls, although matching in pattern, not in size. Each item manufactured by Burgess & Leigh under the Burleih Ware trade name during the 940’s. Each bowl is decorated with a pattern not found today even at chinasearch.co.uk or at the Burleigh site. The pattern displays a thistle vine with yellow thistles on a pastel green background. Gold flecks decorate the rim and a double gold trim frames the pastel green above a cream background.

Each item is stamped underneath Burleigh Ware Burgess & Leigh Est 1851 Burslem England.

Besides mild age related wear and some fading of the gold trim, both bowls are in very good condition with no damages noted.
